A journalist is given a project to tract down the where abouts of a few pre-WWII debutantes for one of those where are they now fluff pieces. One of these women is a Countess Alice, and her reluctance to have her daughter visit eastern Germany, few years after German unification, intrigues the journalist to dig deeper into the Countess' past. The Countess' daughter travels to her mother's former grand estate to find something she doesn't expect, leading her to a mid-life crisis.
It was okay. Life sucks, but one must move on. That's the lesson I'm getting from this. The subject matter is heavy. I'll need awhile to fully process what this all means. The Countess is a strong women, but I also felt for her daughter Connie. I relate more to Connie's modern malaise; her job bores her, unmarried, not sure what she's doing with her life. I see a mid-life crisis in my own future. Not very uplifting story, but nevertheless I learned something ... learned about my own inevitable doom!
Favorite - I was interested in watching this since it had Wendy Hiller, who I first remember from I Know Where I'm Going (1945). This was the last film she made. She looks very British to me.
